It was designed to counter the Japanese Zero, who on equal terms was superior to all earlier American aircraft.  The Hellcat became a game-changer in the Pacific and really earned its name. With its rugged construction, exceptional firepower, superior armor, self-sealing fuel tanks, and impressive speed, the Hellcat was a reliable and deadly adversary in the skies.
